Te Tiriti o Waitangi

In the past two weeks, we have learned about Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

  1. The Maori population in the late 1830s was between 70-80 thousand.
  2. The two main reasons for dropping the population were because of the war and the diseases.
  3. The name of the main settlement in Aotearoa New Zealand at this time was Konoareka/Russell.
  4. Te Tiriti o Waitangi was almost lost in a fire, and this treaty has been in the rubbish and underwater for a long decade.
  5. United Tribes of NZ was set up in 1833 to help resolve the situation.
  6. British send Hobson to New Zealand to set up the Treaty of Waitangi. He was to make sure the Maori people knew what was in the treaty and let Maori people understand the Treaty of Waitangi.
  7. The problem with the way the treaty was written, was that the English treaty was not the same as the Maori treaty.
  8. Maori people believed that they could control the land they owned, and help other people to look after the other land.
  9. The British thought that they could control all the land.
  10. Hone Heke cut the British flag down three times and burnt down the town to show his frustration for what was happening in the north.
